If Lil’ Wayne wanted attention, he certainly got it. The rapper trotted all over the American flag while filming his “God Bless Amerika” video in New Orleans, leading many to believe it was a form of political protest even if it wasn't intentional.

In the video, the flag is hanging behind the 30-year-old hip-hop star and as he begins to rap, it falls behind him. He doesn’t stop and instead stomps over the flag and continues to rap. According to the New York Daily News, a group of people was revealed behind the flag after it dropped on the Hollygrove, New Orleans, street.

“All Americans should treat (the flag) with respect,” John Raughter of the American Legion told the Daily News, even though he hadn’t seen the video. “It is the American flag that is draped across the coffins of our fallen heroes when they come back from war. In fact, any veteran can have a flag on their coffin. As such, it’s entitled to the highest respect.”

It could have easily been seen as a mistake, but for the lyrics that followed: “My country ‘tis of thee/ sweet land of kill ‘em all and let ‘em die/ God bless Amerika/ This so godless Amerika … the stars on the flag are never shining,” he says as he dances on Old Glory. The song is on this year’s “I Am Not a Human Being II” album.

Charges can’t be brought against Lil’ Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., since he is protected by the First Amendment, but it’s caused ire among many people who saw the Louisiana native perform the blatantly disrespectful act, especially on Twitter.
