Grey's Anatomy return date
The midseason premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 14 will air in January 2018. ABC

“Grey’s Anatomy” won’t be on during Thanksgiving, but it’s not just the holiday that’s keeping the doctors off the small screen. The ABC drama is on hiatus until the New Year.

Fans will not see “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 14 return to ABC until Thursday, Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. EST. Fellow TGIT programs “Scandal” and “How To Get Away With Murder” will also have midseason premieres that Thursday.

The fall finale of “Grey’s” was a big episode with tons of cliffhangers. Hackers were attacking the hospital’s computers, and Bailey (Chandra Wilson) was trying to pay off the criminals with Jackson’s (Jesse Williams) money. However, the millionaire doctor wasn’t answering his phone. A scary helicopter ride left Jackson and Maggie (Kelly McCreary) trying to save a patient while experiencing turbulence.

Meanwhile, Jo (Camilla Luddington) had to get vital patient information to Alex (Justin Chambers) before he accidentally kills a kid with the wrong medicine. He wasn’t answering his phone, so Jo texted him. She was running to the kid’s room when she was stopped by her husband. Paul (Matthew Morrison) didn’t look the least bit surprised to see his wife, and he seemed to know that she was going by a new name. Jo, on the other hand, looked stunned.

Luddington promised that the writers took special care when creating scenes for Jo and her abusive ex. “Whenever you do a storyline like this, it’s really important to tell it correctly,” Luddington told E! Online. “Shondaland — ABC and ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ they team up with organizations that help really inform them that they're telling the story correctly, the right dialogue’s being used, because obviously we’re telling a story, we’re sending a message out, and it’s important, definitely, to get it right.”

The wait until Jan. 18 will be a long one, and there isn’t even a rerun to get fans through the first week of hiatus. Thanksgiving will be used to promote ABC’s freshman shows. “Kevin (Probably) Saves The World” will air at 8 p.m. EST on Nov. 23 and “The Good Doctor” will follow it. The pilot episode of “Kevin” will air, making it perfect for new audiences to jump in. Episodes 4 and 5 of “The Good Doctor” will be broadcast afterwards.
