Joss Whedon Batgirl

Joss Whedon finally has his next big project lined up, and the “Avengers” director is switching comic book giants. He’ll write and direct DC’s “Batgirl” soon, but he revealed that he isn’t casting just yet.

While the internet is busy dream casting the role of Barbara Gordon (check out our picks HERE), Whedon must figure out who the character is before he can find the right actress. “No, I don’t have my eye on anybody. I’m creating this character. I’m in a dialogue with her. And then we’ll see who joins that later on,” he told Variety at the “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” premiere.

“I doubt it will be a name. I think this is somewhere where you go and find Batgirl and then you cast her,” Whedon admitted.

However, he was quick to add that he really isn’t set on casting an unknown. He just wants somebody who is right for the role. “I’m not against movie stars,” he added. “They’re great, but you need somebody who’s going to be just right. And, in a situation like this, the name carries a lot of weight so it’s not as critical.”

Batgirl will be Whedon’s third time directing a big budget superhero movie. He helmed the first two films in the “Avengers” series before passing the baton to Joe and Anthony Russo for “Avengers: Infinity War.” Though Whedon was no longer committed to Marvel, he let Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige know he was taking a job with DC.

“He called a couple months ago, which he didn’t have to do and was super cool of him and super nice of him,” Feige told reporters Monday (via Deadline). “And we couldn’t be more supportive. We want to see a Joss Whedon Batgirl film be awesome.”

While speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Whedon revealed that he hadn’t initially been talking to DC specifically about a Barbara Gordon project. “We weren’t even talking about Batgirl — it came up as part of another conversation and then we all got so excited that the movie suddenly appeared. So that’s a really good sign to me,” Whedon said.

Whedon’s “Batgirl” film clearly has everyone excited, but it’s in a very early phase. In addition to no cast, there’s still no script or release date yet either.
