American Horror Story - Queenie
Will Gabourey Sidibe reprise her role as Queenie on "American Horror Story: Hotel"? FX

“American Horror Story: Hotel” viewers received quite the shock Wednesday night. Not only did episode 10 leave the fate of a couple of characters hanging, but the promo video for episode 11 teased that an “AHS” alum will be checking into Hotel Cortez in 2016.

Actress Gabourey Sidibe, who played a witch named Queenie in Season 3, “Coven,” and Regina, the daughter of a missing woman in Season 4, “Freakshow,” will be joining “Hotel.” However, no details about her role have been released. Fans didn’t even know that she’d be making an appearance until the promo aired after Wednesday’s episode.

“Hey, either of ya’ll work here?” her mysterious character says to Liz (Denis O’Hare) and Iris (Kathy Bates) as they step out of the elevator.

“Dinner is served,” Iris says to Liz.

So, could Sidibe be reprising one of her former “American Horror Story” roles? Or will viewers meet a new character? That remains to be seen, but as E! Online points out, creator Ryan Murphy did promise that “characters from previous seasons will come back and check into the hotel.”

Since “Freakshow” was set in 1952, fans can rule out an appearance by Regina. However, it’s totally possible for Queenie to be visiting Hotel Cortez.

When viewers last saw her she had rejoined the coven and competed to become the next Supreme witch. Ultimately Cordelia (Sarah Paulson) became the Supreme, but Queenie stuck around as a council member.

Although “Coven” was set in New Orleans, Queenie could be staying at Hotel Cortez because she’s recruiting a young witch in the Los Angeles area. And despite it not being the safest hotel, Queenie can fortunately fend for herself. For those that don’t remember, she has the power to be a human voodoo doll. That means that whatever pain or injury she inflicts upon herself will happen to the person she channels her energy at.

Everything is pure speculation right now, but another important clue to look at lies in the synopsis for episode 11. According to the episode description, Ramona (Angela Bassett) will “find vitality in an unlikely source.” Her victim could be absolutely anybody -- but one would think that she would definitely get an extra boost of power from drinking the blood of a witch.

“American Horror Story: Hotel” returns to FX with new episodes on Wednesday, Jan. 6 at 10 p.m. EST. How do you think Gabourey Sidibe’s storyline will play out? Tweet your thoughts to @AmandaTVScoop.
