Will (Laurie Davidson) has to meet with Topcliffe (Ewen Bremmer) once again in Season 1, episode 9 of “Will.”

According to the synopsis for next week’s episode of the TNT drama, Will must confront Topcliffe in order to finish his new play, “Richard III.”

Will already had a sit-down interview with Topcliffe in Season 1, episode 8. But since Topcliffe only used that meeting to talk highly of himself, Will didn’t really get any interesting information from it.

Will originally envisioned “Richard III” as a political play to discredit Topcliffe. So when Lady Emilia (Jasmin Savoy Brown) pointed out to Will that there’s no way the censor would allow the staging of a political play in London, Will’s writing suddenly came to a halt. He, however, quickly got back to writing when he had a light bulb moment shortly after Marlowe (Jamie Campbell Bower) paid him an unexpected visit.

During his visit, Marlowe called Presto (Lukas Rolfe) an oracle. Soon after Marlowe left Will’s place, Presto asked the playwright what oracle means.

“An oracle can see things that haven’t happened yet. It’s from a myth,” explained Will.

When Presto asked what a myth is, Will said: “It’s a story set in the past to illuminate something in the present.” And during that very moment, Will realized that his new play should be a myth.

“Though the play purports the life of long-dead King Richard III, it is in fact a play concerning the darkest man in our present world: the Queen’s own torturer, Topcliffe,” Will revealed to Richard (Matthias Inwood).

Elsewhere in episode 9, Richard must tell his father James (Colm Meaney) a harsh truth to achieve greatness. Although James is the one running the theater, he still doesn’t know that “Richard III” is actually a political play cloaking as a myth. So Richard will probably be the one to tell James that Will’s new play is actually about the dangerous man in London.

Also in next week’s episode, Alice (Olivia DeJonge) contemplates a perilous mission. While the episode synopsis doesn’t specify what mission it is, Alice’s recent involvement with Southwell (Max Bennett) suggests that her latest undertaking has something to do with the Catholic priest’s ultimate objective, and that is to deliver the manifesto for peace to the Queen.

“Will” Season 1, episode 9, titled “Play the Devil,” airs on Monday, Aug. 28 at 11 p.m. EDT on TNT.
