Tennis, in particular Wimbledon, has been as much about fashion and haute couture as about the game itself. From lacy frills to contemporary military patterns, tennis stars like Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova and Anna Kournikova have time and again exhibited how fashion is an integral part of the game.

In the 1860s, when women first started playing the game, the only attires deemed suitable were heavy flannelled dresses and even serge with furs attached.

However, all these changed during the post First World War period when women started to look for comfort while playing. Long-sleeved dresses gave way to sleeveless shirts and tops while long skirts were replaced by tailored flannel shorts and ultimately the current pleated skirts.
