Japan has won the Women's World Cup, beating the United States 3-1 in a penalty shootout.

Abby Wambach had given the U.S. team the lead with a goal in the 104th minute of the Women's World Cup final in Frankfurt, Germany, but Japan became the first Asian nation to take home the World Cup prize after both sides were tied 2-2.

The U.S. missed their first three penalties, giving Japan the chance to take the prize when Sak Kumagai scored the final shot in a 3-1 shootout.

Abby has really willed this team along, said ESPN commentator Julie Foudy, And she will go down as one of the best players ever to come through the program and certainly one of the clutchest.
