“Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins said it was important for them to cast Ares as the villain. Warner Bros.

Some fans questioned why Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) had to fight Ares (David Thewlis) in “Wonder Woman,” especially since there were several other interesting villains to choose from. Director Patty Jenkins finally cleared the air regarding this mystery.

Jenkins recently revealed they went for Ares because they needed someone who is equal to Diana in power, according to Comic Book. “In my opinion, it would’ve been a mistake to make a first ‘Wonder Woman’ film without her absolute arch rival nemesis Ares, who is the most classic villain from the lore and is her counterpart of her point of view,” Jenkins said in the movie’s special features. “She’s a god and he's a god, and he knows something she doesn’t know and made a choice based on that.”

Jenkins added that Ares saw weakness in Zeus’ creation, so he is doing everything he can to destroy mankind. Diana, on the other hand, saw weakness in mankind and therefore took it upon herself to be their savior.

“She, in the course of her journey, learns the same thing and ends up saying ‘oh my god they are all of those things,’ but she makes the opposite choice. If her story is about a shift in point of view, his storyline is a participant with that story, instead of being a villain bad guy, which is the point of the movie,” said Jenkins.

Jenkins is already working on the sequel for the movie. Even though they haven’t decided on the villain yet, one thing’s for certain: they will bring Diana to America. “The story will take place in the U.S., which I think is right,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “She’s Wonder Woman. She’s got to come to America. It’s time.”

Steve Trevor’s (Chris Pine) men — Sameer (Said Taghmaoui), Charlie (Ewen Bremner) and Chief (Eugene Brave Rock) — together with his secretary, Etta Candy (Lucy Davis), might even be back to carry out a top secret mission to save mankind. In a deleted scene from the theatrical release, the four of them talked about a “very old, very powerful” artifact that needs to be delivered to the Americans. If it ends up in the wrong hands, the said artifact would cause a lot of trouble for the world.

“Wonder Woman 2” has been scheduled for release on Dec. 19, 2019.
