“Wonder Woman” is going to introduce fans to a new origin story for the Amazons.

According to Slash Film, Zeus created mankind to be companions to the gods. But Zeus’ son Ares was displeased with this, and he got jealous of his father’s relationship with mankind. He then manipulated the minds of people and corrupted them, turning them against each other. He made them fight each other in a series of wars, while Ares destroyed other gods in order to keep them from helping mankind.

Zeus then created the Amazons, including Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen), the queen of the Amazons and future mother of Diana Prince (Gal Gadot). Together with her sisters General Antiope (Robin Wright) and Lieutenant Menalippe (Lisa Loven Kongsli), they manage to stop Ares from causing more destruction, but only for a short while.

Ares is tricky and manages to convince mankind to enslave the Amazons. He later battles against his father. With his dying breath, Zeus creates Themyscira, so the Amazons will have a safe place to stay.

Reports have it that David Thewlis of “Harry Potter” fame will take on the role of the villain. Ares will be made using a mix of CGI and practical effects, according to Batman News, so Thewlis might be barely recognizable in the movie.

It was even rumored earlier that Arnold Schwarzenegger might be playing Ares, after director Patty Jenkins and co-writer Geoff Johns both followed the actor on Twitter.

It could have simply been coincidence, but it could also mean something else entirely, according to Comic Book. Previously, fans were able to deduce that Joe Manganiello had been cast as Deathstroke after several DC Films executives simultaneously followed him on Twitter.

“Wonder Woman,” which is directed by Patty Jenkins, will be released on June 2.
