Friday is World Smile Day, a celebration of happiness hosted by the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation in honor of the man who created the smiley face. That may seem like a stretch, but given the damage Hurricane Matthew is doing in the Atlantic Ocean and the anxiety the upcoming election is causing in the United States, we could all probably use a reason to grin.

"The smiley face knows no politics, no geography and no religion," the holiday's organizers wrote on their "about" page on Facebook. "Harvey’s idea was that for at least one day each year, neither should we."
