SummerSlam 2016 was certainly one of the most interesting WWE pay-per-views in a while. The event lasted more than six hours as two new champions were crowned.

It was a big card, which included 12 matches on the pre-show and PPV combined. There were a few candidates to close the show, but WWE ultimately decided to go with Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton as the main event. It was the fourth time in five years that Lesnar’s match was the main event of SummerSlam, and though his victory wasn’t surprising, the manner in which he won was not expected.

Below are the results and a short recap for each match from SummerSlam 2016.

Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton

Lesnar looked as strong as ever, supplexing Orton all over the ring. It looked like the Viper might steal a win after he hit an RKO on the announce table, followed by one in the ring. But Lesnar kicked out, and proceeded to deliver a barrage of punches to Orton’s head. With Orton leaking blood, the match was stopped and Lesnar was given the victory via TKO. Lesnar would not stop beating up Orton, and he delivered an F5 to Shane McMahon, who ran to ring and tried to get Lesnar to leave.

Winner: Brock Lesnar

Finn Bálor vs. Seth Rollins (WWE Universal Championship Match)

The match was largely overshadowed by the crowd, which was distracted by the new WWE Universal Championship belt that was revealed before the bell rang. But amid chants from the crowd about their disgust for the new belt, Balor and Rollins put on a great match that ended when the recent NXT call-up hit the Coupe de Grace for the win.

Winner: Finn Balor

WWE World Champion Dean Ambrose vs. Dolph Ziggler

Despite Ziggler’s return to the main-event scene, the match went the way most of his matches have gone in the past few years. He made his opponent look good, and ultimately lost clean to Ambrose’s finisher.

Winner: Dean Ambrose

John Cena vs. AJ Styles

In a match of the year candidate, Styles did what few wrestlers have been able to in recent years and he defeated Cena clean. Styles got the job done with a Phenomenal Forearm, after using an Attitude Adjustment and the Styles Clash on Cena.

Winner: AJ Styles

U.S. Champion Rusev vs. Roman Reigns

The match never got underway, as the two fought before the bell rang and they had to be separated. Reigns hit Rusev with a chair and was sent to the back, though he returned and hit Rusev with a Spear before leaving for good.

No Winner

WWE Women’s Champion Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte

In the most shocking moment of the night, Charlotte defeated Sasha to win her belt back. She reversed a Bank Statement and pinned the champ, concluding a match that saw the women perform multiple high-risk maneuvers.

Winner: Charlotte

WWE Tag Team Champions The New Day vs. Gallows & Anderson

The New Day lost the match, but they retained their titles. Big E had been off of WWE TV for weeks after being taken out by Gallows and Anderson, but he returned during Sunday’s match. Former “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart aligned himself with The New Day earlier in the night, and with Gallows and Anderson set to attack him during the match, Big E came to the rescue. However, that caused The New Day to be disqualified.

Winner: Gallows & Anderson

Enzo Amore & Big Cass vs. Chris Jericho & Kevin Owens

It looked like Enzo and Cass were in control and ready to get the win, but they ended up falling to Jericho and Owens. With Owens taking out Big Cass on the outside of the ring, he shoved Enzo off the top rope. Jericho caught Enzo and hit him with a Codebreaker to end the match.

Winner: Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens

Intercontinental Champion The Miz vs. Apollo Crews

Crews will have to wait before winning his first title in WWE. Distracted by Maryse at ringside, Crews was hit with a Skull-Crushing Finale, and The Miz retained his belt.

Winner: The Miz

Nikki Bella, Natalya & Alexa Bliss vs. Becky Lynch, Naomi, & Carmella

With Eva Marie being suspended 30 days for a wellness policy violation, WWE needed to find a replacement. It came in the form of Nikki Bella, who wrestled for the first time this year after suffering a neck injury. She pinned Carmella for the win.

Winner: Nikki Bella, Natalya & Alexa Bliss

Sheamus vs. Cesaro (Kickoff Match)

Sheamus got the better of Cesaro in their first match of the best-of-seven series, winning with a Brogue Kick after he gouged Cesaro in the eye.

Winner: Sheamus

Sami Zayn & Neville vs. The Dudley Boyz (Kickoff Match)

Neville got the pin after hitting the Red Arrow, as The Dudley Boyz continue to lose match after match.

Winner: Sami Zayn & Neville

The Usos, American Alpha & The Hype Bros vs. Breezango, The Ascension & The Vaudevillains (Kickoff Match)

No surprise here. The babyfaces won the kickoff match, all of whom will be in contention to become the SmackDown tag team champions.

Winner: The Usos, American Alpha & The Hype Bros
