As any dog owner knows, man’s best friend has a dangerous combination of a limitless appetite and a bottomless stomach. We love canines despite the fact that they will eat seemingly anything at any time, especially things that are definitely not food. Anything small enough to fit in your dog’s mouth is not safe in your home and should be hidden well.

A family in Edmond, Okla. experienced an extreme case of this with their four-year-old Shar-Pei Dovey. When Dovey went to the vet for an exam, Dr. Chris Rispoli noticed the dog had lost an unusual amount of weight in a short time period. An X-Ray revealed why:

Yes, that handsome face managed to swallow 21 baby pacifiers, according to KOKH. It would be a problem after the second or third time a pacifier went missing, but this somehow managed to happen 21 times. Rispoli saw the pacifiers in Dovey’s stomach and needed to act quickly to resolve the situation.

"In 20 years, this is the craziest surgery I've ever done,” Rispoli told KOKH. “They were pretty stunned because we thought there were seven to nine in there, and I pulled out 21.”

Rispoli also emphasized that people should hide things like pacifiers instead of leaving them out if they have dogs. In case you are worried, Dovey will be fine and is able to go home Friday, according to KOKH.

The severity of this case might not be familiar to dog owners, but they have all experienced something like this before. There is nothing like an unexpected trip to the vet after your dog eats something poisonous (like chocolate) or something completely inedible (like furniture). ABC News has a great list of unusual things dogs have eaten over the years. One dog ate hundreds of screws and nails, another dog ate a $300 engagement ring and another somehow ate a phone charger. Impressively, a bulldog named Branson managed to outscore Dovey and eat 27 pacifiers.
