Microsoft announced a new feature called Game Chat Transcription for the Xbox One gaming console and Windows 10 PCs Wednesday. The feature is intended to improve in-game communications on both platforms.

“This feature allows speech-to-text and text-to-speech capabilities, offering a new way to communicate that creates a more accessible and inclusive gaming experience for everyone.” Microsoft’s official blog post on its Accessibility Blog stated.

The feature is a mix of two capabilities — speech-to-text and text-to-speech. While the former will transcribe players’ voice communications and also allow players to read the text from the transcription on their window, while gaming, the latter will actually speak the written word(s) in the game out aloud to other players. Players can also choose from different voices in the text-to-speech menu.

The feature is expected to enhance the multi-player gaming experience, both on the Xbox One console and PCs.

  • Navigate to Settings > All Settings > Ease of Access > Game Chat Transcription
  • If you want to transcribe other players’ voices, select Speech-to-text
  • If you want to have a chat read aloud to other players, select text-to-speech
