“Big Bang Theory” spinoff, “Young Sheldon,” will premiere sometime in the fall. Ahead of its big debut, executive producer Jim Parsons dished on what fans can expect from the CBS sitcom.

In an interview on “What Happens Live With Andy Cohen” (via US Weekly), the 44-year-old funnyman revealed that he came up with the idea of a spinoff because of his nephew. “It’s like an origin story. I was trying to come up with an idea for a show, and we had this idea about my little nephew, who is really smart, down in Texas. My family is pretty average – no offense to them, but they’re very normal, and he’s very smart. One thing led to another and I thought, ‘This could be Sheldon,’” he said.

Parsons pitched the idea to “Big Bang Theory” creator Chuck Lorre, and the latter was immediately on board with the concept. The upcoming episodes of “Young Sheldon” will be 30 minutes each, and the single-camera sitcom will feature “Big Little Lies” star Iain Armitage as Sheldon’s younger counterpart. Parsons will also be part of the spinoff, but only as a narrator.

In March, Parsons also spoke with Willie Geist on “Today” and said that he was a bit hesitant to come up with a spinoff for “Big Bang Theory.” “We have a decade of material built in already of talking about his childhood and talking about this character’s past. You never know in TV what people are going to be interested in or not,” he said.

As of late, it is still unclear whether or not Sheldon’s mom in “Big Bang Theory,” Mary Cooper, will also be played by veteran actress Laurie Metcalf.

Meanwhile, Parsons and Armitage have already met. In fact, the two actors spent some time together at the theater. On his Instagram account, Parsons shared a photo of him and the 8-year-old actor while watching the “Come From Away” musical. Parsons dubbed the show and Armitage as “fantastic” in his caption. Armitage also posted the same photo on his Instagram account, and his mom thanked Parsons for spending time with her son.

Also in March, Armitage sat down for an interview with Vulture where he admitted that he hasn’t watched any episode of “Big Bang Theory.” When asked what fans can expect from the spinoff, the young actor said that he has only read the first two paragraphs from the script.

Armitage is also unsure whether or not he and his family will move to Los Angeles when the filming for “Young Sheldon” begins. After all, they live in New York. “We don’t think so. We don’t really know. We just started, so we’re still figuring it out,” he said.

In other news, “Big Bang Theory” Season 10 will air its final episode on Thursday, May 11. The installment will see the return of Sheldon’s former admirer, Ramona (Riki Lindhome). She and Sheldon will reunite while the latter’s girlfriend, Amy (Mayim Bialik), is at Princeton. Luckily, Amy’s friends, Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Bernadette (Melissa Rauch), will keep her posted on Sheldon and Ramona’s whereabouts.

“Big Bang Theory” Season 10 airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
