ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” has warned fans to expect certain comic book characters, but sometimes they like to throw in surprises. In Season 3, episode 18, Hellfire was suddenly revealed as a character that was introduced a few weeks ago.

James (Axle Whitehead), a potential Inhuman who was turned away from Afterlife, went through Terrigenesis in the episode. He came out with fire powers, and some fans connected the name James and those powers to the character. Just in case anyone didn’t get it, the character says he is considering calling himself Hellfire. While viewers already know a little about the TV show version of Hellfire, they might want to know about the comic book version. The Secret Warrior caused plenty of drama in the source material.

Secret Warrior — James, better known as J.T. James, didn’t start out working for Hive (Brett Dalton) in the comics. He was with the good guys. He was the descendant of Phantom Rider and Daisy (Chloe Bennet) recruited him.

Powers — Audiences have already seen James control fire. In the TV show, he is much more free to use his powers however he wants. In the comics, according to Marvel Database, the fire was limited to the chain he used as his signature weapon.

Daisy’s Boyfriend — Hellfire actually starts a romantic relationship with Daisy. Could Lincoln (Luke Mitchell) have some competition on the TV show soon?

Betrayal — J.T. wasn’t the best Secret Warrior. He had trouble respecting authority and following orders. That lead to his downfall. He stole cash from a Hydra-run bank and the evil organization tracked him down, Comic Vine reports. Hydra forced him to be a double agent. In exchange for giving up the Secret Warriors’ plans, Hydra guaranteed Hellfire and Daisy’s safety.

This double agent storyline was why many fans speculated that Ward would turn out to be Hellfire for years. It seems “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is skipping straight the double agent stuff and jumping to Hellfire working for the bad guys — but will he be able to redeem himself if Hive is defeated? Fans will have to tune in to find out.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 3 airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EDT on ABC.
