Apple has confirmed that it is not abandoning 3D Touch for Haptic Touch in the upcoming iOS 13 update. Many rumors previously claimed that the tech giant is ditching the dated technology in favor of a newer one.

The iOS 13 software update will come equipped with the Haptic Touch technology that requires users to do a press down on the screen for a short while to reveal shortcut commands. Since the feature is focused on providing quick ways to open apps, it overlaps 3D Touch in some ways.

Apple’s 3D Touch allows the iPhone to sense varying degrees of pressure on the screen. With the right amount of force, users can either open up apps or just take a quick peek of its features. Since the two technologies have similarities, it would be redundant to have them both. This is why many believe that Apple could be retiring 3D Touch and replace it with Haptic Touch.

But now Apple has confirmed that it won’t be eliminating 3D Touch anytime soon. An email coming from Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi confirmed to Twitter user donbytyqi that 3D Touch isn’t missing in iOS 13.

Federighi said that 3D Touch was missing from the first beta of iOS 13 due to a bug and that they are going to address this in the next beta update. For now, users won’t be able to access the 3D Touch feature, but the Haptic Touch will be able to cover for it for the time being.

In the past, Apple discontinued Touch ID in favor of implementing Face ID. While both biometric security systems work differently, Apple chose to stop including Touch ID in most of its newer releases. Even though Touch ID still works on some Apple devices, users won’t be seeing it soon unless Tim Cook’s firm has a change of heart and revive it in newer models.

The iPhone 11 and other Apple devices are already expected in the second half of 2019, but the company has yet to officially disclose any details about their release dates. Once announced, we’ll finally find some concrete details if these two touch technologies can continue to exist on one device, or if the older feature is going to be discontinued for good in the near future.
