Argentina Earthquake: Magnitude 6.1 Quake Hits Santiago del Estero, No Damages or Injuries Reported
An earthquake hit north central Argentina on Monday, shaking the area 69 miles east-southeast of the city of Santiago del Estero. The magnitude-6.1 earthquake shook the region, but there have been no immediate reports of damages or injuries.
The deep earthquake struck 342 miles below the Earth's surface. A magnitude-6.1 quake that had struck closer to the surface could have resulted in severe damages and many deaths in the populated area. The Argentinian city of Santiago del Etero has a population of 245,000 people.
The Associated Press reports the earthquake hit the area at 4:46 a.m.
