Storms in Alabama have claimed at least 128 lives, destroyed many house and buildings, and caused power and traffic disruptions. A state of emergency has been declared and 1,400 National Guard troops have been deployed for search and rescue and law enforcement.

In total, 178 people have been killed in the south, according to a tally from ABC News.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said: Our thoughts are with the families and communities in Alabama and Georgia that have been affected by the severe storms and tornados that have ripped through the region this evening and continue to impact the southern states.”

President Obama said: “Michelle and I extend our deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives because of the tornadoes that have swept through Alabama and the southeastern United States. Our hearts go out to all those who have been affected by this devastation, and we commend the heroic efforts of those who have been working tirelessly to respond to this disaster.”
