  • Parnas is an associate of Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani
  • Parnas is facing charges that he helped illegally funnel foreign funds to Trump’s presidential campaign

California Republican Rep. Devin Nunes is facing criticism after avoiding questions from a reporter about his connections to Lev Parnas this weekend before going on Twitter to accuse the journalist of stalking him.

While at a Republican fundraising event this weekend in Washington, D.C., Nunes was approached by Lee Fang, a reporter for The Intercept. Fang questioned the congressman about his alleged role in efforts by President Donald Trump and his administration to pressure Ukrainian leadership into investigating Hunter Biden. Nunes was also asked about his connection to Parnas, an associate of Trump’s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani. Parnas is currently facing charges that he helped illegally funnel foreign funds to Trump’s presidential campaign.

Nunes refused to acknowledge Fang, before returning to record the journalist on his cellphone. At the request of the congressman, police then removed Fang and others from The Intercept from the hotel. Nunes later tweeted this video, while accusing Fang of having “stalked” him.

The allegation of stalking, however, appears to be baseless and users on Twitter have since taken to mocking the congressman over the interaction.

A subpoena issued by the House Intelligence Committee to AT&T for phone records connected to the indicted Parnas revealed that Nunes had communicated often with Parnas, raising questions about the representative’s role in the ongoing Ukraine scandal. Additionally, Nunes appears to have been in frequent contact with Giuliani, who is also being eyed as a key figure in the impeachment proceedings.

Giuliani, as well as Trump himself, has been accused of pressuring the Ukrainian government to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, for alledged corruption related to his role as a senior member of Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian natural gas company. Democrats believe this, however, was politically motivated, with the aim being to discredit Joe Biden, Trump’s potential 2020 election opponent.

This revelation is especially explosive, as Nunes is a ranking official on the House Intelligence Committee and an outspoken critic of Democrats’ push to impeach Trump. Nunes had previously accused Democrats of deliberately withholding important information related to the impeachment inquiry and is now under fire by Democrats for having seemingly done this himself.

Nunes recently filed a defamation lawsuit against CNN over an article claiming that Parnas was open to testifying against the congressman.
