The blue chip Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at a record high of 15,745.88, breaking through the blue chip index's previous record, which was set last Tuesday, as surging Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) shares paced equities.

Traders said the day's gains reflected comments from Federal Reserve officials that the economy's weakness justifies more monetary easing.

Last Tuesday the Dow closed at what was then a record, 15,680.35. The broader S&P 500 index also closed higher at 1,770.43, but did not break its record. The tech-heavy Nasdaq ended down slightly at 3,931.95.

Microsoft shares closed 4.2 percent higher.
