Who is the HyperX Cloud 2 Wireless Headset for?

  • The HyperX Cloud 2 Wireless is for those who want above average performance that is easy to use for a decent price, along with the comforts of wireless use.
  • The HyperX Cloud 2 Wireless also offers top-notch build quality along with its audio quality.
  • The headset is a great multi-tasker, allowing wireless use across multiple gaming consoles and PCs.

I've reviewed a large number of gaming headsets in my day, and I often have people come to me and ask for advice on which headset is best for them. One of my go-to answers has always been the HyperX Cloud 2. It falls right into the perfect middle between compatibility, performance, and price. This is why I was so thrilled when HyperX revealed the Cloud 2 Wireless, basically the same great headset I've loved, but now free from it's 3.5mm cable.

While my love for the HyperX Cloud 2 is well-documented, how does the headset fare freeing itself of wires? It's pretty much exactly what you want if you were hoping for a wireless Cloud 2.

The Cloud 2 Wireless features the same great audio quality that you get from the standard Cloud 2, along with many other HyperX headsets. Thanks to its fairly large 53mm drivers, paired with the virtual 7.1 surround sound, the Cloud 2 Wireless provides some bombastic bass while also heightening even the softest of sounds.

Build Quality With Emphasis On Quality

The build quality with the HyperX Cloud 2 Wireless is great. The headset is light, but feels very durable thanks to its nice blend of metal and plastic parts. What really surprised me was how well the leatherette ear cup covers served as noise-cancelling devices. There was a dramatic difference between how much I could hear with the headset on compared to even having one ear cup off my ears.

The battery also lasts a long time, meaning you aren't going to have to worry too much about having to wait for a charge. The Cloud 2 Wireless opts for a USB-C charger instead of the old standard USB micro charge port, so it's pretty easy to plug in and get back to gaming or video conferencing again.

One Headset, Multiple Uses

The Cloud 2 Wireless uses a USB dongle for its 2.4GHz wireless audio, meaning that the lag found in many Bluetooth headsets is not present here. It also means that the Cloud 2 Wireless is compatible with a number of different devices. The Cloud 2 Wireless is designed to work with the PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC. All you have to do is simply unplug the dongle from one device and plug it into the next and you are set.

This makes the Cloud 2 Wireless both a great gaming headset and something that can help out during work hours. While listening to music on a PC is always nicer with a pair of headphones, video conferencing is more important than ever right now. Thanks to the included removable microphone, the Cloud 2 Wireless is a great option for holding meetings or giving presentations online.

I pretty much only have two complaints, and they're relatively minor. The first is that the dongle is USB-A instead of USB-C. If the dongle was a USB-C, it would allow the Cloud 2 Wireless to work with the Switch in handheld mode. Instead, the headset can only be used when you have your Switch docked.

On a similar note, the second complaint is that the headset does not come with a 3.5mm jack on it, meaning that you can't use it as a wired headset if you want. This one isn't that big of a deal breaker for me (especially considering the wired Cloud 2 already exists), but some added flexibility if the battery ran out or if you wanted to use the headset with your Xbox One would have been nice.

Final Thoughts

At $150, the Cloud 2 Wireless continues the legacy of the near-perfect HyperX Cloud 2: A truly great gaming headset for a reasonable price. Thanks to its wireless dongle, the Cloud 2 Wireless can go beyond the world of gaming to offer even more functionality as a standard pair of headphones, or something that can be used in conference calls for the foreseeable future. And of course, if the price seems a little too high, there's always the standard Cloud 2 wired headset.

The HyperX Cloud 2 Wireless is currently only available from the HyperX website.
