KEY POINTS

  • Dwayne Johnson launched Teremana Tequila in March 2020
  • The brand sold more than 600,000 9-liter cases in 2021
  • Johnson said the company is gearing up for international rollout

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is one of the highest-paid actors in the world. While his movie career already brings him tens of millions of dollars a year, his new business venture could soon make him a billionaire.

The professional wrestler-turned-actor launched Teremana Tequila in March 2020 with his partners Dany Garcia, Jenna Fagnan, Ken Austin and the Lopez family. In its first year, the brand was on track to sell 300,000 cases, according to The Spirits Business magazine.

Teremana doubled its sales in 2021, surpassing 600,000 9-liter cases.

It is unclear how much of a stake Johnson owns, but Celebrity Net Worth suggested that Teremana may now be worth as much as $3.5 billion. This means that if the actor maintained a 30% equity stake in the brand, his stake would be worth more than $1 billion under this hypothetical scenario.

The website compared Teremana's performance to that of Casamigos, the tequila co-founded by George Clooney. The "Ocean's Eleven" actor's brand was acquired by Diageo for $1 billion in 2017, when it was on pace to sell 170,000 cases a year.

Currently, Johnson is estimated to be worth $800 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. This figure reportedly includes what the site believes is his 30-40% stake in Teremana Tequila and a current $2 billion conservative estimate valuation of the brand.

Johnson told The Spirits Business last month that Teremana is "poised to begin [its] international rollout," working with distributor Mast-Jägermeister.

"I want to build Teremana into a true international brand," he said.

Aside from his business venture, Johnson's films and various endorsement deals bring in at least $100 million each year. He reportedly has endorsements with Apple, Ford and Under Armour, among others.

In 2020, Forbes named Johnson the highest-paid actor in the world with $87.5 million. This figure included the $23.5 million he was paid for his role as Interpol agent John Hartley in the Netflix movie "Red Notice."

This year, he will appear in DC's "Black Adam" and "League of Super-Pets" and will film "Red One" for Amazon Studios.

In addition to his film and endorsement earnings, Johnson is also making money through his production company Seven Bucks, which he co-founded with his now-ex-wife Dany Garcia in 2012.

He also rakes in millions from doing sponsored content on social media, where he boasts a combined total of 420 million followers across multiple platforms.

On top of getting upward of $20 million per movie, Johnson negotiates a separate seven-figure social media fee for every single film he appears in and promotes, according to Forbes.

Also adding to the actor's fortune are his various investments, including in real estate.

In November 2019, Johnson paid $9.5 million for a 46-acre equestrian estate in Powder Springs, Georgia. He listed this property for $7.5 million just 14 months after the purchase.

He previously owned a home near Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He sold this house in 2019 for $4.5 million. In April 2021, he paid $28.7 million for Paul Reiser's Beverly Park mansion in Los Angeles.
