  • Tottenham Hotspur beats Manchester United for Sergio Reguilon's services
  • Reguilon is raring to play under Spurs coach Jose Mourinho
  • Reguilon's deal includes a Real Madrid buyback option

Tottenham Hotspur is making up for lost time by taking in new faces in the mix. Though most have heard of Gareth Bale’s sensational return to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, there is another young, promising player who made a surprising switch – Sergio Reguilon.

The Madrid youth product was on the wish list of several clubs, notably Manchester United. The Red Devils were close to getting the 23-year-old left-back, but talks hit a snag.

Real Madrid wanted a buyback clause included in the deal, something the Spurs immediately agreed to, ESPN reported. The Spurs signed Reguilon for roughly $35 million.

The interest in Reguilon hardly comes as a surprise. He had a great performance with Sevilla last season while on loan. He was also a vital cog for the team that won the Europa League and helped the club finish fourth in La Liga.

Reguilon had a hard time breaking the ranks in Real Madrid with Zinedine Zidane opting to go with Marcelo and Ferland Mendy. Though the two seniors got the left-back spots, Los Blancos wanted a buyback clause in place in the event his stock continues to improve. Though it was not mentioned, it may have been something that the Red Devils were not too keen on agreeing to.

Regardless, Tottenham was willing to take the risk and the rest is history. Reguilon averaged 1.8 tackles and 1.1 interceptions and completed 1.6 dribbles per game in La Liga play last season, NBC Sports reported.

With the deal sealed, it appears Reguilon is ready to buckle down and with the Spurs. He praised the club with world-class players and said that he can’t wait to work with Jose Mourinho via Twitter.

"Tottenham has world class players and a world class manager. I can't wait to start working with him," Reguilon said in his first Spurs interview.

It was the personal interest of Mourinho that convinced Reguilon to consider Tottenham, plus his relationship with Florentino Perez and Daniel Levy.

Before Tottenham sealed the deal, there were other clubs also interested in getting Reguilon. That includes Chelsea FC and Inter Milan. The Blues' plans were shelved when they took in Ben Chilwell, while Inter struggled to meet the financial requirement to snag the 23-year-old player.
