  • Politico/Morning Consult poll finds few express support for Trump refusing to ever concede
  • The survey ran from Nov. 13-16

A majority of Americans think President Donald Trump should concede the presidential election to Joe Biden, according to a survey of 1,994 registered voters by Politico and Morning Consult.

The poll showed that only 12%, or 245 of the respondents, said Trump should not concede “no matter what.” Another 9%, or 189 respondents, said they had no opinion or didn’t know. The rest, representing a combined 78% of respondents, said Trump should either concede right away (46%) or admit defeat if it’s clear he’s “unable to back up his claims of widespread fraud" (32%).

And 54% said they were concerned that Trump won’t step down.

Trump has yet to concede the election. It’s not mandatory for a sitting president to do so.

Major media outlets confirmed Biden as the winner with 306 electoral votes compared to Trump’s 232. A candidate needs 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the presidency. Biden leads Trump in the popular vote by almost 6 million.

Without citing evidence, Trump has made claims that the Democrats stole the election, the vote counts were rigged or the election was otherwise fraudulent.

Asked about their trust in the election system, 47% said that had at least some faith in the process. Another 37% expressed at least some doubt, while 5% either had no opinion or didn’t know.

The Politico/Morning Consult survey was conducted Nov. 13-16. It had a margin of error of 2 percentage points.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Nov. 10 showed that nearly 80% of Americans recognize Biden as the winner.
