Stocks fell more than 1 percent on Thursday on investor disappointment that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke gave no new details of steps policy makers might take to mend the economic recovery.

A speech by Bernanke on the U.S. economic outlook followed the release of data that pointed to a weak labor market but also a better performance on trade that could boost third-quarter gross domestic product.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 124.35 points, or 1.09 percent, at 11,290.51. The S&P 500 <.SPX> fell 14.23 points, or 1.19 percent, to 1,184.39. The Nasdaq Composite <.IXIC> was down 26.09 points, or 1.02 percent, at 2,522.85.
