White Castle has issued a recall for a number of its frozen sandwiches because they may be contaminated with Listeria. The recall affects six-pack cheeseburgers, six-pack hamburgers, six-pack jalapeno cheeseburgers, 16-pack hamburgers, and 16-cheese cheeseburgers.

The recalled frozen sandwiches have best buy dates that range from 04 Aug 2020 to 17 Aug 2020 that were sold at select retailer locations. The White Castle frozen burgers were sold in a rectangular cardboard package with the code date located on the side panel.

Consumers that have purchased the frozen burgers are urged to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund or exchange. Questions about the recall can be directed to White Castle at 1-800-843-2728. Any medical questions regarding the recall should be directed to a physician.

White Castle has not received any reports of illness due to the recalled burgers. The Listeria contamination was discovered during third-party sampling of its frozen sandwiches. White Castle has undergone an extensive sanitation and cleaning, increased its food safety testing and manufacturing guidelines, and conducted comprehensive testing to ensure no presence of Listeria is found at its facility.

“Our number one focus is the safety of our customers and our team members, and as a family owned business, we want to hold ourselves to the absolute highest standards of accountability in all aspects of our business – and especially food safety,” Jamie Richardson, vice president at White Castle said in a statement.

Listeria can cause serious and sometime fatal infections in young children, elderly adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Some individuals my have symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeria can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
