“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 7 will be its last. Ahead of their appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, the ABC show announced that next year will be the end of the road for our favorite secret agents.

Deadline revealed that it was not a network cancellation but a creative decision for the show. Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb said that the writers wanted to make sure the drama got a proper ending.

“The simplest answer is so that we can end on our terms, really. … So we can actually build a season that will tie up any threads that are there,” he told the outlet. “To make sure that we come to a conclusion that’s satisfying to the fans, to the cast, to Marvel, and to ABC.”

It’s not an opportunity many Marvel Television shows have been given. Netflix canceled all five of the studio’s superhero shows without warning. ABC canceled “Marvel’s Agent Carter” despite a cliffhanger in the Season 2 finale. It’s the first time any of the Marvel Cinematic Universe TV shows will get a proper ending.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” kicked off in 2013 and was the first TV show from Marvel Television. The program will end its run next summer with 136 episodes.

Star Clark Gregg made it clear that he is grateful for the fans’ support through the years. The actor started playing Phil Coulson in 2008’s “Iron Man,” making him one of the longstanding stars of the MCU.

“The gratitude we feel for the army of incredible fans/friends/agents who gave us this epic journey is difficult to express. It’s a show about a family and you are ours. Thank you,” he wrote on Twitter.

Jemma Simmons actress Elizabeth Henstridge also thanked the viewers while executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen called for fans to celebrate at San Diego Comic-Con.

The cast appeared in a Hall H panel on Thursday to discuss the current sixth season, which will come to an end in early August. They released a new trailer for the last episodes of 2019.

The seventh and final season of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” will air summer 2020 on ABC.
