A federal judge granted Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) a preliminary injunction against the U.S. sales of the Samsung Electronics Co. (Seoul: 005930) Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet computer, Bloomberg reported Wednesday.

Apple made a strong case that Samsung violated Apple's design patent, which describes the front, back and sides of a device that looks similar to the iPad, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh wrote. The injunction gives the Cupertino, Calif., company a key victory in its global battle against Samsung over smartphone and tablet patents.

A trial is set for July 30.

Apple shares rose $2.65 to $574.59 in pre-market trading.
