The director for the upcoming “Aquaman” movie will be James Wan, Warner Brothers announced yesterday. The movie is slated to be released in July 2018 in the U.S. and will star Jason Momoa in the title role.

Greg Silverman, president of creative development and worldwide production at Warner Bros. Pictures, made the announcement on the official Warner Bros. website. Silverman said that the studio was “lucky” to have worked with Wan on movies like “The Conjuring” and its sequel. He added that they are now “thrilled” to have the highly successful director work on the next DC Comics movie.

Calling “Aquaman” a potential “major tentpole picture” for the studio, Silverman expressed his confidence in Wan for having proved himself in the past and said that he would be “bringing his incredible creative talent and unique voice” to the project. The director will also be responsible for supervising the script being written by Kurt Johnstad.

Wan was at the helm of the action thriller movie “Furious 7” starring Vin Diesel. According to Variety, the movie has grossed $1.5 billion in box office revenue, making it one of the most successful movies of 2015.

The announcement by Warner Bros. also includes a plot synopsis of “Aquaman.” The character will reportedly be seen as the king of the Seven Seas and will be ruling in the fantasy world of Atlantis. The character will be “caught between a surface world constantly ravaging the sea and Atlanteans looking to lash out in revolt” while he attempts to protect the “entire globe.”

The movie will be produced by Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder and Zack Snyder. Complimenting the director and the lead cast member of the movie, Roven said that Wan is a “great storyteller” who can make “action truly explode on the big screen,” and Momoa has a “dynamic presence that commands your attention.” “Together, they will bring an undeniable vitality and energy to this character,” Roven said.

Momoa’s character will first be introduced in the movie “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” where he will be joined by a host of superheroes. The characters featuring in the standalone “Aquaman” movie have still not been revealed.
