The Artist won the Oscar for Best Motion Picture of The Year at the 84th annual Academy Awards.

The Artist swept the ceremony, with wins for Jean Dujardin for Best Actor and Michel Hazanavicius for Best Director. Dujardin was the first actor in a silent film to win an Oscar since the first Academy award ceremony 83 years ago.

The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and quickly earned critical acclaim (including a Palm Dog award for Uggie), going on to win the Critics' Choice Award for best picture and top honors at the Producers Guild of America, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and the Golden Globes.

But The Artist, as much as it was a critical and commercial success, had to beat eight other movies for the ultimate 2012 Oscars honor: The Descendants, Hugo, The Help, Moneyball, War Horse, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, Midnight in Paris and The Tree of Life.
