An asthmatic man died Thursday shortly after being arrested while trying to break into a car in Manhattan, officials told the New York Post.

A 52-year-old called 911 to report that the man was trying to get inside her car while she was still inside, the paper reported. She called 911 then fled the scene.

Police responded and found the suspect at a restaurant at 3795 Broadway, then put him in handcuffs, the Post said. The man, who was not identified by the Post, started to have trouble breathing and asked to use an asthma pump he had in his pocket.

The police uncuffed him and let him use the pump, but it was not enough to save him, as he had to be taken to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, where we was pronounced dead, according to the paper.

An investigation into the man's death is ongoing.
