Convicted and admitted Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff worked in a maintenance job in August, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing prison logs from a medium security prison facility in North Carolina where he is serving a 150 year sentence.

Fellow inmates have tried to get close to Madoff, 71, to learn if he has hidden money and to attempt to find out where it has been located, the report states, drawing from interviews with current and former inmates, as well as lawyers who have visited him.

Prison officials prevent groups from crowding him, the report states.

A Butner Federal Correctional Complex spokeswoman declined to comment on Madoff’s life in prison but would say only that he is treated fairly, the Journal reports.
