Sheldon (Jim Parsons, center) gets in the middle of Leonard (Johnny Galecki, right) and Penny's (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, left) marital problems in episode 2 of "The Big Bang Theory" Season 9. CBS

Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting) had been married for less than 24 hours in CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory” Season 9 premiere before Leonard’s former infidelities left the newlyweds in the middle of an angry spat. Meanwhile, Sheldon (Jim Parsons) was not faring much better dealing with his and Amy’s (Mayim Bialik) breakup. Could things get any worse in episode 2? Well, leave it to Sheldon to put himself in the middle of Leonard and Penny’s relationship and make an awkward situation even tenser.

In the Season 8 finale, Leonard confessed that he had kissed a woman named Mandy (Melissa Tang) a few years ago on a research trip, hence why he and Penny were not on speaking terms. A sneak peek video for episode 2, “The Separation Oscillation,” reveals that Sheldon has a plan to solve Leonard and Penny’s marital problems. He proposes Penny kiss another man to make it even and the newly-single PhD even volunteers himself for the task. Penny is game, but, needless to say, Leonard does not seem too thrilled about the idea.

While it might look like Sheldon is embracing his new single status with his Penny plan, the truth seems to be that he is struggling with his breakup. Another sneak peek video features a Skype conversation between him and Amy in which she chides him for not giving her any space to process her feelings.

“I've seen and talked to you more in the two days we’ve been broken up than I did in the past two months we were together," says Amy.

Can Sheldon fix his own relationship without destroying Leonard’s in the process? Fans will have to wait to find out. “The Big Bang Theory” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EDT on CBS.
