A British man was executed in China on Tuesday for drug smuggling despite last minute appeals by the British government and his relatives.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said he was appalled and disappointed that China ignored repeated appeals to show mercy on Akmal Shaikh, a 53-year-old father of three who was believed to suffer from severe bipolar disorder.
