  • An image shows the late 2-year-old Caylee Anthony with her mother Casey at the Orange County Courthouse in Orlando Florida
Two-year old Caylee Anthony, the daughter of Casey Anthony, was last seen alive on June 16 2008. But it was not until July 15, almost a month later, that she was reported missing by her mother Casey Anthony to the police. Five months later, in December 2008, Caylee's decomposed skeletal remains were found in a wooded area near the Anthony home by a meter reader who was relieving himself. Following investigation, the authorities said Casey chloroformed Caylee and then duct taped her nose and mouth, suffocating the girl. Casey's lawyers claim Caylee was not murdered. They say the toddler accidentally drowned in the family swimming pool and George, Casey's father, helped her keep the death a secret. George has denied the claim. Casey was charged with seven counts, including first degree murder, aggravated child abuse and misleading the police in the death of Caylee. Following a seven week trial, Casey was not convicted of murder but was charged with four counts for lying to police by the jury and was sentenced to four years in jail. However, because of previously spent time in jail and good behavior, she was released on July 17. REUTERS

Jaycee Dugard was kidnapped by Phillip Garrido, a paroled sex offender, when she was 11 years old and was held captive for 18 years during which time Phillip had repeatedly raped Dugard and had fathered two children through her. On the morning of June 10, 1991, when little Dugard was on her way to school, Phillip and Nancy Garrido had kidnapped Dugard. For those 18 years, Dugard suffered a lot from Phillip Garrido's physical and sexual abuse. Dugard lived in despair and with pain in her heart. Dugard was rescued in August 2009, when Garrido brought her and her two daughters for a parole meeting. Garrido even lied that Dugard was her daughter. However, Dugard eventually wrote down her real name before the parole officers and they confirmed her true identity. In June 2011, Phillip, who pleaded guilty to one count of kidnapping and 12 counts of sexual assault, was sentenced to 431 years in prison by El Dorado Superior Court. His wife Nancy was sentenced to 36 years for her role in the crime, including kidnapping and one count of rape by force. REUTERS
  • Leiby Kletzky
Leiby Kletzky, a 8-year-old Brooklyn boy, was smothered to death and chopped to pieces on July 13. His severed, bloody feet were found in the murderer Levi Aron's kitchen refrigerator. The police found kletzky's severed feet wrapped in a plastic bag in the refrigerator in the kitchen. A plastic garbage bag with blood stained towels inside was found nearby. Later, the police also found a red suitcase dumped in a dumpster. It contained the rest of Kletzky's chopped-up body. Levi Aron also admitted killing the boy. The brutality of the murder has shocked the nation, and even veteran police officers said they were baffled by the motive of the crime. REUTERS

Natascha Kampusch, an Austrian television hostess, was kidnapped when she was 10 on 2 March 1998. She was held in a secret cellar over eight years by her kidnapper Wolfgang Priklopil. The secret cellar was underneath Priklopil's garage and the entrance was concealed behind a cupboard. It had 54 sq ft of space and its door was made of concrete and was reinforced with steel. The cellar had no windows and was soundproof. Kampusch finally escaped on August 23, 2006. Priklopil committed suicide in jumping in front of a train after realizing that the police were after him.
