Chaz Bono was announced on Monday as a contestant in the upcoming season of Dancing With the Stars and immediately became a highly-searched person. Bono, formerly known as Chastity, will be the first transgender to compete on the popular show. He will be partnered with dancer Lacey Schwimmer.

Here are six books about transgender topics. Three were published earlier this year and the others are coming soon.

The Lives of Transgender People by Genny Beemyn and Susan Rankin

Beemyn and Rankin surveyed more than 3,000 participants- transsexual women, transsexual men, crossdressers, and genderqueers. The purpose of the study was to gain a better understanding of this population and the formation of gender identity. The book will be published on Nov. 15.

Queer: The Ultimate LGBT Guide for Teens by Kathy Belge, Marke Bieschke and Christian Robinson

This book is for teenagers who are exploring their sexuality or gender-identity. It is meant to help teens navigate their new social lives and defend themselves, among other things. The book was published in June.

Nina Here Nor There: My Journey Beyond Gender by Nick Krieger

Nick moved from his native New York City to San Francisco and explored and came to understand the gender spectrum. This memoir was published in May and has been noted for its honesty and humor.

A Strange Sort of Being: The Transgender Life of Lucy Ann / Joseph Israel Lobdell, 1829-1912 by Bambi Lobdell

This work of historical non-fiction is about a woman who grew up doing predominantly male things, such as hunting, eventually took up with a woman, and lived for 60 years as a man. It will be released on Jan. 20, 2012.

Homofiles: Theory, Sexuality, and Graduate Studies Edited by Jes Battis

This book is a series of essays written by gay, lesbian and transgender graduate students who discuss the relationship between sexuality and scholarship. The book will be released on Oct. 16.

Transition: The Story of How I Became a Man by Chaz Bono

Bono's book talks about his life and what led to his decision to undergo a physical transformation. The book also goes into the actual transition itself, which started in 2008. It was published in May.
