A dog with a remarkably long tongue earned a spot in the 2018 Guinness World Records. Mochi "Mo" Rickert, an eight-year-old female St. Bernard from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, set a new world record with her tongue — which measured 7.31 inches in length.

"It still does not seem real! Mochi is so humble, she never brags or boasts but I know that she is as proud of her new record as we are," her owner, Carla Rickert told Guinness World Records Tuesday.

The Guinness World Records verified Mochi in 2016 as having the longest tongue on a living dog and recently visited her for a photoshoot for the record book’s new "Amazing Animals" installment. The book was released Aug. 29 and highlights various record-breaking animals.

Rickert adopted the rare canine from Big Dogs Huge Paws, an animal rescue shelter, just six years ago.

"With this record, we hope to bring attention to how much joy rescued animals can bring to their new family," Rickert told Guinness World Records. "It still does not seem real! Mochi is so humble, she never brags or boasts but I know that she is as proud of her new record as we are.

"It feels truly amazing to be a part of the Guinness World Records: Amazing Animals book! We are so grateful for the opportunity to make other's smile."

Mo enjoys playing dress up in costumes, being photographed, eating sweet potatoes and spending quality time with her family, Rickert said.

However, having a record-breaking tongue poses challenges. Mochi suffers from breathing issues, produces extra slobber, and needs assistance when picking up items off the floor.

"Mo is resilient, comical, loving and eternally grateful and loyal to us — her forever family," Rickert said. "This once abused and neglected pup has taught us that it’s okay to be different. We are proud of her unique feature.”

After the record book announced Mochi’s title, Craig Glenday, Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief, released a statement regarding the dog’s impressive achievement.

"We are very excited to welcome Mochi and her record-breaking tongue to the Guinness World Records family as part of our new publication, Amazing Animals," Glenday said. "Amazing Animals is not your typical animals’ reference book. Instead, it takes a sideways look at our favorite pets and wild animals, and is a chance for us to celebrate the barking mad side of animal record-breaking."

"So alongside the classic fastest, largest and tallest record-holders, you’ll find the most talented, most followed and most pampered creatures on Earth. It’s a hoot!"

Mochi may have the longest tongue in the world on a living dog, but the longest tongue on a dog ever went to Brandy, a boxer from St. Clair Shores, Michigan. Her tongue measured at a whopping 17 inches. She lived with her owner John Scheid until September 2002, according to Guinness World Records.
