Electronic Arts Inc's chief operating officer has resigned, and a source close to the matter said he will take an executive post at Zynga, the privately held social games company.

A regulatory filing released on Tuesday showed that John Schappert, EA's chief operating officer, resigned from the video game publisher on Monday. Schappert had worked at EA for the past 22 months and before that with Microsoft Corp for two years.

It was not clear which senior role Schappert would take at Zynga, and the firm was not immediately available for comment.
