European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso will do all he can to build consensus in the European Union over a mechanism to provide Greece with financial aid, the Commission said on Monday.

It said Barroso was in regular contact with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who says Greece does not need financial aid to deal with its debt problems. Barroso remained hopeful EU leaders would reach agreement on Greece, the Commission said.
