Champion filly Rachel Alexandra became the first filly in 85 years to win the $1.1 million Preakness Stakes on Saturday from the 13th post position.

Rachel Alexandra was ridden by Calvin Borel and trained by Steve Asmussen. Borel now has a shot at his own Triple Crown, having won the first two races on two different horses.

Rachel Alexandra held off by a length a late charge by Kentucky Derby champion Mine That Bird to win the middle jewel of U.S. thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown series.

Rachel Alexandra's winning time was 1:55, behind the Preakness record of 1:53.40 set in 1985 by Tank's Prospect and equaled by Louis Quatorze in 1996.

But Borel, who rode Mine That Bird to the Derby triumph two weeks ago, said: She's the greatest horse I have ever been on in my life, according to Reuters.
