Gotham_105 recap
Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) got himself into some trouble with Maroni in "Gotham" Season 1 episode 5. Jessica Miglio/FOX

“Gotham” Season 1 episode 5 gave Maroni (David Zayas) more power than ever. He got a piece of Arkham last week, and this week he wanted to take more from Falcone (John Doman). He planned to rob Falcone’s casino, and he wasn’t taking no for an answer. Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) offered his help—and he got Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) kidnapped.

“I’m not a dishwasher and this isn’t my first rodeo, so to speak,” Penguin said.

He led Maroni and his men to Gordon, who they promptly kidnapped…for a nice Italian meal. Maroni sat down to eat while he questioned Jim about the Penguin’s story while the Penguin was held against a meat slicer. If Jim told the right story, the Penguin would be safe. If he told the wrong story, Penguin’s face would be sliced open and Gordon might be next.

Apparently, Penguin just told the truth about Jim setting him free. Gordon gave the mob boss new information about the framed Wayne murderer, which Maroni was pleased to know. He laughed and let Penguin go. He actually seemed excited to have an ex-employee of Fish Mooney’s (Jada Pinkett Smith) working for him. He knew this would work to his advantage. Gordon wasn’t so happy that he had to tell Maroni his secrets. Maroni promised Gordon that he’d stay quiet—until he needed a favor.

“I’ll call you if I ever need anything,” Maroni said.

“You do that,” Jim sighed.

Gordon had to get back to solving his case for the Gotham City Police Department. They were investigating an ex-employee of the pharmaceutical company WellZyn (a subsidiary of Wayne Enterprises). Stan Potolsky (Daniel London) had given out a new drug called Viper to people on the street that made them super strong before killing them.

Gordon and Bullock (Donal Logue) realized that he would be going to the Wayne Enterprises benefit. He was going to try to kill all of the influential members of Wayne Enterprises with Viper.

Unfortunately, Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) was at the benefit. He had been researching his family’s business and the city of Gotham. “I don’t want revenge. I want to understand how it all works—how Gotham works,” Bruce told Alfred (Sean Pertwee).

He found “irregularities in the Arkham project” and was intent on getting some answers. He sat down with a representative from the company, but Stan’s terrorist attack interrupted Bruce’s investigation.

Gordon found the terrorist on the roof and tried to stop him. He shot the barrel of drugs, and Stan inhaled all of the Viper. Gordon didn’t want to shoot him, though. He wanted answers.

“Go look at Warehouse 39,” Stanley shouted before he jumped off of the rooftop.

There was nothing in the warehouse. However, the Wayne representative that Bruce spoke to followed them from afar. She knew there was nothing in the warehouse but kept a close watch on them.

“We’ll review that if they get close,” she said into her phone.

Back at the Wayne estate, Alfred acted differently. Something about the attack made Alfred give up on pushing Bruce to move on. He picked up a file and started helping him research.
