(Reuters) - Five people were killed on Wednesday when a gunman opened fire in a residential area in a Phoenix suburb, the Arizona Republic reported on its web site.

The shootings occurred in a residential area of single-family homes in the city of Gilbert, the web site said. Aerial photographs showed a tree-lined street of red tiled homes cordoned off with police tape, with more than a half dozen patrol cars parked close by.

Gilbert police did not immediately respond to queries about the shooting.
