International Business Machines Corp's quarterly profit rose 8 percent from a year earlier, buoyed by strong growth in sales of its computers and software.

The world's biggest maker of mainframe computers reported second-quarter net income of $3.66 billion, or $3.00 per share, compared with $3.39 billion, or $2.61 per share, a year earlier.

Revenue climbed 12 percent to $26.7 billion.
