The tragic 2011 T?hoku earthquake and tsunami is the worst natural disaster to hit Japan in the last half century. The confirmed death toll now total 14,133 while the number of missing total 13,346. The final death toll, therefore, is probably north of 25,000.

The vast majority of these casualties occurred as a result of the drowning. Indeed, Japan's was generally prepared for the earthquake but not the tsunami.

These massive casualties have bereaved many families and orphaned many children. Six-year-old Wakana Kumagai's father was one of the victims of the tsunami.

She is pictured below, with her mother, at her father's temporary mass grave site in Higashi-Matsushima, Miyagi prefecture, on April 21, 2011.
