The couple that shared a name have decided to call it quits -- Kelly Hildebrandt and Kelly Hildebrandt have filed for a divorce after three years of marriage.

The couple states “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the dissolving of their marriage, NBC 6 reports.

Kelly Carl Hildebrandt, the male in their relationship, said “We gave it our best shot.”

“She’s a Florida girl, and I’m a Texas guy,” he added. “We really did come from pretty different worlds.”

The couple met in February 2009 when Kelly Katrina Hildebrandt decided to search her own name on Facebook, and the only result was Kelly Carl’s profile. Katrina decided to send Carl a message and sparked their whirlwind romance.

“She said, ‘Hi. We had the same name. Thought it was cool,’ I thought she was pretty cute,” Kelly Carl told the ssociated Press in 2009.

The two kept in touch via email and phone calls for three weeks until Carl travelled from his home town of Lubbock, Texas to visit Katrina in her home town of Coral Springs, Fla., and the couple fell in love.

The relationship blossomed thereafter and the couple quickly became engaged. They first gained media attention in July 2009 when NBC 6 first reported their story, which then prompted worldwide attention, as well as appearances on “Today Show,” “Inside Edition,” and Fox News.

The couple’s story also made the front page of Yahoo.com, and when they married on Oct. 11, 2009 at Lighthouse Point in Florida. Their wedding photo was featured in People magazine, and they were also mentioned in one of Conan O'Brien’s monologues on his late night talk show, according to NBC 6.

After living as newlyweds Coconut Creek and celebrating their first anniversary with a trip to Key West, the couple filed for divorce last year with the Broward County; Carl and since moved back to Texas, and Katrina has since deleted her Facebook profile.

Kelly Katrina was not available for comment; however, her mother issued a statement to NBC 6, “Yes, I am sorry to say they have separated. I am happy to say they have remained good friends and are both doing well.”

Kelly Carl told NBC 6 that he’s not quite sure if the media attention negatively affected his marriage, but that he would likely not marry someone that shared his name again for that reason, noting that he and Katrina’s name was just the “cutesy side” of their very real relationship.

“I wouldn’t want my future spouse to have to deal with everything from before,” he said. “That wouldn’t be a fair situation, given the media coverage.”
