The Knick
Edwards (Andre Holland, left) helps Thackery (Clive Owen, right) test out a new hypothesis in episode 3 of "The Knick" Season 2. Cinemax

Dr. Thackery (Clive Owen) returned to the Knickerbocker in episode 2 of "The Knick" Season 2, but he did not receive the warmest welcome in the Cinemax series. The board has reservations about the drug addicted doctor, Bertie (Michael Angarano) hands in his letter of resignation when he hears Thack is back, and Edwards (Andre Holland) is just bummed to not be getting his chief surgeon promotion. On top of all of that, Thackery's failed attempt at operating on Edwards' eye revealed he may not yet even have the stomach for surgery -- a chief of surgery who can not perform surgery? How will that play out in episode 4, "The Best With the Best to Get the Best"?

According to the synopsis for the new episode, Edwards helps Thackery test a new hypothesis. So, it looks like this partnership will continue, despite Thackery coming within an inch of leaving Edwards blind in episode 2. The fact remains that the two men need each other -- Edwards needs someone who knows about his eye and can fix it, while Thackery will likely need some help getting surgery fit.

Elsewhere in the episode, Cornelia (Juliet Rylance) runs into more problems with her husband and father in law, while Dr. Gallinger (Eric Johnson) takes up a disturbing interest in eugenics.

Meanwhile, the promo for episode 6 reveals that Lucy's (Eve Hewson) father, A.D. Elkins (Stephen Spinella), might be sticking around for awhile. His dramatic sermon in episode 2 teases a possible evangelistic mission for the preacher in the big city. Unfortunately, that might mean some trouble for Lucy, whose life has not exactly been conforming to her strict religious upbringing -- she slept with Thackery, for starters. One scene from the teaser shows Lucy's father, well, dealing out some discipline to his daughter. With Thack and Bertie both giving Nurse Elkins the cold shoulder, where will she turn for help?
