Matt Dillon pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a speeding charge he received Tuesday for allegedly driving 106 mph on an interstate highway in Vermont.

The actor's lawyer, Mark Kaplan, entered the plea without the actor present in Orange County District Court, and said he hoped the case could be resolved without a trial.

Court documents say Dillon was cooperative and apologetic after being stopped by police in Newbury.

Dillon was allegedly traveling more than 30 mph over the posted 65-mph speed limit on the interstate, which caused him to be charged with criminal negligent operation.

He faces a year in jail and may be fined $1,000 if convicted.
