Hollywood darlings Michelle Williams and Jason Segel have ended their nearly yearlong relationship, Us Weekly reports.

Although the pair have raved about each other in interviews, and friends described them as very happy with one another, the magazine reported that Segel and Williams struggled with their long-distance romance. While Williams, 32, and her 7-year-old daughter Matilda live together in an apartment in Brooklyn, N.Y., Segel maintains a residence in Los Angeles.

Last March, the magazine reported that despite the long distance the couple was "trying to make it work” and that Williams hadn’t “been this happy in a long time."

Although the couple tried to maintain a low profile amid tabloid scrutiny, Williams recently opened up about Segel in an interview for the March issue of InStyle. Speaking of her role as a single parent (Matilda’s father, Heath Ledger, died in 2007 of an accidental drug overdose), Williams said that she had finally settled into it.

"I cook and clean a lot these days. I'm in a very domestic cycle and I happen to love it," she told the magazine. "I feel like this is a real expression of my love for my daughter. Not the only one, but an important one.”

Williams also said the media’s acceptance of her relationship with Segel came as a happy surprise. "If people are happy about it, that makes me feel good, because in my head the opposite is often true -- that people fault or blame you for things," she said.

"You wish they would just want you to be happy, for your kid to be happy, and for you to have a good life and do good work," Williams added. "Any kind sentiment that the world can feed back, well, I won't turn it down."

Williams also surprised some readers by claiming that she hadn’t known who Segel was before they began dating.

"He is nice… I didn't actually realize who he was before I started dating him," she said. "I didn't realize he was so tall [6'4"]. I thought, 'Hey, man, you're cramping my style!' I tried wearing wedge heels for a while to compensate, but it wasn't me and I just gave up."

Segel on the other hand, who was frequently photographed with Williams’ daughter, was more tight-lipped about the relationship. The “How I Met Your Mother” actor first confirmed the relationship last April, telling “Extra,” "I think we would just very much like to be happy. That's all I'm going to say about it."
