A crash involving a fast-moving vehicle in Jersey City, New Jersey, injured multiple people Sunday, including a uniformed police officer, NJ.com reported. An initial crash between the vehicle "traveling at a high rate of speed" and another car sparked a chain reaction, police said, WNBC-TV, New York, reported.

The fast-moving first car -- moving along Ocean Avenue -- struck the second vehicle, which then careened onto a sidewalk near Myrtle Avenue, city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said according to NJ.com. It is unclear how many people were injured. A number of pedestrians were struck by the vehicle, WCBS, New York, reported.

Twelve people -- including the injured officer -- were transported to the Jersey City Medical Center and are in stable condition, reported NJ.com reported. WCBS reported the officer is a member of the Jersey City police force. The officer is expected to be OK, police in Jersey City told WNBC-TV.

Three other people were sent to Christ Hospital, hospital spokesman Jarrod Bernstein said, NJ.com reported. Two of the victims refused treatment and the other is in stable condition. There was no further information provided concerning the victims.

The driver was detained at the scene of the incident, which occurred at about 8 p.m. and is currently under police investigation, WCBS said. A picture tweeted by a reporter at WABC, New York, showed a damaged minivan being taken away on a tow truck.

Jersey City is a city of about 240,000 people outside of New York City. The intersection where the crash occurred is about a 35-minute drive from Manhattan. Earlier in the week the Jersey City police force was in the news after a photo showing an officer helping a young man tie his tie went viral. The photo of the officer received an outpouring of positive feedback on Facebook, NJ.com reported.
