The oldest man in the world, Henry Allingham, died at the age 113 during his sleep at St. Duntstan's care home in Ovingdean, England, his care home said Saturday, according to CNN.

Allingham, a British veteran from World War I, had been a member of the Royal Air Force. He was also the last known survivor of one of the greatest naval battles of that conflict, the Battle of Jutland against Germany. Until his death, he continued to spread a message of peace and honor to those soldiers who died.

''I think we need to make people aware that a few men gave all they had to give so that you could have a better world to live in,'' Allingham said in a previous interview with the Associated Press. ''We have to pray it never happens again.''

Allingham is survived by five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 14-great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild, the Associated Press reported. His funeral will be in Brighton, Dennis Goodwin, his longtime friend told AP.
